Body Doubling
Why the Hard Projects Get Easier With Someone Beside You
The hardest part of any project is the decision to begin. I can relate. Between basketball gyms and kids' practices, getting a decent dinner on the table is my struggle right now. I know that planning even one or two meals a week would make the whole week less stressful. Knowing that doesn't make it happen though. Starting does.
Organizing works the same way. Most of us have one space we keep putting off: the garage you park around, the closet you keep closed when company comes, the pile of papers that has been "next weekend" since spring. In homes across Kirkland and the Eastside, we see it all the time. It usually isn't a knowledge problem. You know what to do. The hard part is starting, and staying with it once the decisions get tough.
If you're feeling weary, defeated, or even a little embarrassed about a space in your home, you're not alone, and there is no shame in asking for help. Sometimes what you need most is someone to help you start and remember why it matters. We're honored to be that for our clients. That's where body doubling comes in.
What Is Body Doubling?
Body doubling simply means doing a task with another person present. They might help, or they might just be there working on their own thing. You've probably seen it without knowing the name. Many networking and business groups host virtual co-working sessions where everyone logs on, says what they're tackling, and works quietly side by side for an hour. Nobody checks anyone's work. Just knowing others are there makes it easier to open the inbox, finish the invoice, or make the phone call you've been avoiding.
Why It Works
Starting gets easier. A set time and another person on the calendar turn "someday" into "Tuesday at 10."
You stay on task. It's harder to drift off to your phone when someone is working alongside you.
Decisions feel lighter. Saying "keep" or "donate" out loud to another person moves things along faster than going back and forth in your head.
Momentum builds. One cleared shelf makes the next one feel possible.
Think of It Like a Personal Trainer
Most people who hire a personal trainer already know how to do a squat. What they're investing in is structure, encouragement, and someone expecting them to show up. A gym buddy works the same way: you go on the cold, dark morning because they're waiting in the parking lot.
Organizing is no different. Plenty of our clients could do the work on their own. Booking sessions gives them a reason to start, a plan to follow, and steady accountability until the project is done.
Slow Progress Is Still Progress
Some of our most rewarding work happens over the long haul, with clients we see regularly for months or even years. Progress can be slow, and that's okay. A home doesn't fill up in a weekend, and it won't empty in one either. What matters is that every session, something gets decided. A few boxes leave, a corner opens up, and a space that felt stuck starts working again.
Without those sessions on the calendar, much of that work would still be waiting. Having someone beside you doesn't make the decisions for you, but it makes them much easier to face.
Body Doubling in a Kirkland Home
Each session starts with a quick walk-through and one clear goal for the day: the hall closet, one side of the garage, or the kids' art supplies. Then we work right alongside you, sorting one category at a time. You decide what stays, and we keep things moving.
By the end, donations are bagged and ready to go, and the space you started with is finished, not half done. With darker afternoons ahead and the holidays coming, fall is a natural time to start. A few sessions now means less to work around when guests arrive.
How to Try Body Doubling on Your Own
Invite a friend over, and offer to return the favor at their house.
Join a virtual co-working session, or set up a video call with a friend who also has a project waiting.
Pick one small zone: one drawer, one shelf, one bin. Not the entire garage.
Set a timer for 30 to 60 minutes and stop when it goes off.
Talk through your decisions out loud.
Load the donations into your car before your helper leaves.
When to Bring in Our Team
If you've tried on your own and the project keeps stalling, it may be time to bring in help. Our team works with families across the Eastside and follows the same simple process in every home: decide where to start, sort, edit, and organize. Editing, deciding what stays and what goes, is where most people get stuck, and it's where having someone beside you helps most.
Some clients book a single session to get unstuck. Others schedule regular sessions over several months, the same way they'd keep a standing appointment with a trainer. Either way, you don't have to do the hard part alone.
Who Can Body Doubling Help?
Body doubling is a well-known strategy in the ADHD community, where many people find it one of the most effective ways to get started on hard tasks. And it helps far beyond that. Busy parents, families downsizing, and anyone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or short on time can benefit from having someone beside them.
